Why we use compostable bags (and the truth about 'biodegradable' ones)

Jamie Chen 2025-04-22 6 min

Walk down the pet aisle at any Target in Temecula or Murrieta and you'll see a dozen brands with green leaves on the packaging. Most of it is marketing.

What these words actually mean

  • Compostable. Has to break down within a specified timeframe. Look for BPI certification or ASTM D6400. That's a real standard.
  • Home compostable. Stricter. TUV Austria's OK Compost Home is the gold standard.
  • Oxo-degradable. Avoid. The EU banned them in 2021.
  • Plant-based. Means nothing on its own.
  • The Riverside County reality

Even certified compostable bags don't reliably compost in a Riverside County landfill — landfills are anaerobic. So why bother?

  • SB 1383 infrastructure is expanding.
  • Microplastics. Compostable bags don't shed microplastics into soil and groundwater.
  • Manufacturing footprint is cleaner.
  • What we use

A BPI-certified compostable bag. Costs us 4 cents more per bag. We absorb the cost.
