The hidden parasites in dog waste — and why pickup matters more than you think

Diego Ramirez 2025-11-06 7 min

There's a common assumption that dog waste "breaks down naturally." It's not. It's the opposite of fertilizer — it's an active health hazard.

What's actually in there

A single gram contains around 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. On top of that:

  • Roundworms (Toxocara canis). Eggs survive in soil for up to 7 years.
  • Hookworms. Larvae burrow through skin.
  • Whipworms. Eggs persist in soil for years.
  • Giardia. Common around Lake Skinner and Diamond Valley Lake.
  • Parvovirus. Survives in soil for up to a year.
  • Why our climate doesn't help

The Inland Empire's mix of hot days and irrigated lawns is actually near-ideal for some parasites.

    What pickup prevents

Proper, prompt pickup interrupts the parasite lifecycle. Most parasites need a few days outside the host to become infectious.

    Practical steps

  • Pick up at least every other day, every day in summer
  • Don't let kids play barefoot in dog areas
  • Get fecal checks twice a year
  • If you've had a sick dog, let the area dry out and re-treat
  • Watch the corners — parasites concentrate where dogs frequent
