When washing is the right answer
When the smell is coming off a hard surface rather than off the ground. Concrete is porous, and a patio or kennel run that has been used for months has absorbed residue into the surface itself. No amount of additional scooping reaches it, because there is nothing left to scoop.
The test is simple. Get close to the concrete on a warm day. If the smell is stronger there than over the lawn, the concrete is the source and washing is what fixes it.
Why the surface dictates the pressure
Broadcast concrete tolerates pressure that will visibly damage stamped concrete, older pavers, or anything sealed. Stamped surfaces lose their colour layer. Pavers lose the sand between them, which then has to be replaced. Sealed concrete goes cloudy.
This is why we test an out-of-sight corner before committing to a setting, and why we will decline to wash a surface rather than damage it. A patio that needs replacing costs vastly more than the smell was ever worth.

Where the water goes matters

How often does a dog area need washing?
For most patios, once or twice a year is enough alongside regular scooping. A kennel run or a heavily used concrete area with multiple dogs is closer to quarterly. If you are smelling it from indoors, it is overdue regardless of the calendar.
Will it damage my patio?
