Artificial turf and gravel dog yards, cleaned properly

The surface changes the whole job

Natural grass is forgiving in a way people only appreciate once they stop having it. Soil hosts organisms that break waste down, rain moves liquid through it, and the whole system quietly processes a certain amount on its own.

Artificial turf and gravel do none of that. They are non-absorbent surfaces with somewhere for liquid to sit underneath, which means solids are easier to remove and liquid becomes the actual problem.

That inversion is the thing to understand. On grass, solids are the job and odor follows the solids. On turf and gravel, solids are the easy part and odor has its own separate cause that picking up does not touch.

Why artificial turf starts to smell

Urine passes through the turf backing and into whatever is underneath. On a properly built installation that is a drainage layer over compacted base, and it drains. On a poorly built one it sits.

What is left behind either way is not the liquid. It is the residue, and bacteria working on it produce ammonia, which is the specific smell people describe as hitting them when they open the back door on a hot afternoon.

Heat is the multiplier. Our summers make a turf yard that was merely noticeable in March genuinely unpleasant in August, and that is why the complaint is so reliably seasonal here.

Hosing it down often makes the next week worse rather than better, because water alone rewets the residue without removing it and then the surface stays damp for longer.

What artificial turf actually needs

Three separate things, and doing one and skipping the others is why people conclude turf cannot be kept clean.

  • Prompt solid removal. Solids sit on top of turf rather than in it, so this part is genuinely easier than grass. It just has to actually happen.
  • A rinse routine that moves liquid through rather than around. Frequency matters more than pressure here.
  • Periodic enzyme treatment. This is the part that addresses residue rather than diluting it, and it is the step most homeowners never do.
  • Occasional brushing of the fibres, which keeps the pile upright so liquid drains instead of pooling at the surface.

The pressure washing question

People ask for turf to be pressure washed and it needs a careful answer, because the wrong equipment on artificial grass causes damage that does not grow back.

High pressure on a narrow nozzle will displace infill, flatten fibres permanently, and can separate seams. Unlike real grass, turf does not recover from this. The repair is replacement.

What works is lower pressure across a wide fan, treated as a rinse rather than a blast, paired with an enzyme product doing the actual work. That is a genuinely different service from washing concrete and it should be priced and described differently.

If a company offers to pressure wash your turf the same way they would do a driveway, that is a reason to ask more questions before agreeing.

Gravel and decomposed granite

Gravel yards are common locally and they behave differently again. Solids sink between stones instead of sitting on top, which makes removal genuinely harder and makes a quick visual check unreliable.

Decomposed granite is the harder of the two. It compacts, holds residue, and stains, and waste left on it breaks down into the surface rather than on it. A DG dog run that has been neglected for a season does not come back with a rinse.

Larger rounded gravel is more forgiving because there is space for liquid to move through, but solids get further down and the pickup is slower and more deliberate than the same job on grass.

Both benefit from the same pattern: pick more often than you think, treat the surface periodically, and accept that a rake pass is part of the job rather than an extra.

What not to put on these surfaces

This is where well-meant advice does real damage.

  • Bleach on artificial turf. It degrades fibres and backing, and it does not solve an ammonia problem at the source.
  • Vinegar as a standing routine. It masks briefly, it can affect some backings over time, and it does nothing to the residue causing the smell.
  • Anything scented with no enzyme in it. You are adding a smell on top of a smell, and in heat the result is worse than the original.
  • A stiff wire brush on turf fibres. It shreds them. A soft or medium bristle brush is what the pile is designed for.

What a realistic result looks like

A well maintained turf or gravel dog area is genuinely low odor and pleasant to use. It is not a surface that maintains itself, and the marketing that suggested otherwise is why so many owners feel they were misled.

The honest expectation is that turf trades weekly mowing and mud for a different maintenance routine, not for no maintenance at all. Households that accept that are usually happy with it. Households that expected zero upkeep are the ones tearing it out four years later.

For a heavily used dog area, a sensible rhythm is regular solid removal, a rinse folded into that, and an enzyme treatment several times a year weighted toward the hot months. Get that going and the surface is fine. Skip the treatment step and no amount of picking up will fix what you are smelling.
